Description
For anyone familiar with naval aviation, “Fightertown” is a place that holds a special place in the hearts of many. In the 1950’s, NAS Miramar was designated a “master jet station” and was the home of all west coast fleet fighter squadrons. During the 1960’s, it was home to not only all of the fleet fighter squadrons, but the Replacement Air Group (RAG) training squadron, FRAMP (aircraft maintenance school) and west coast E-2 squadrons also. In 1969, the famous TOPGUN Navy Fighter Weapons School was formed to train Navy and Marine aircrews in the deadly art of aerial combat over Vietnam and “Fightertown” was born. A-4 Skyhawks, F-4 Phantoms, F-8 Crusaders, F-5 Tiger II, and F-14 Tomcats were everyday sights on and around Miramar. 1986 found “Fightertown” propelled to the silver screen in the ultra popular movie “Top Gun”.
